Kerman province in Iran has some astonishing historical and naturel sites, from the Shah Zadeh Mahan Garden to the Lute Desert, but none can compare to the bizarre Stone Garden.
Why was this Garden built?
In 1961 during the Pahlavi dynasty due to land reform plans implemented by the government, Darvish khan just like many other farmers of that time, lost part of his land. After the trees in his garden died, he began digging holes in the dry ground and extensively planting dead trees in these pits. When the planting of 180 dried trees was over, he began hanging stones from the branches of the trees that looked like fruit by doing so he created the famous Stone garden. Eventually the area of this rocky garden reached 1000 meters.
How were the stones found?
atMost of the rocks in the garden have holes inside them which the branches have passed through. Some believe that the stones were in a certain place that was found by him and was brought there. Others say that he himself had made the stones in this way. However, no one has ever seen him piercing the stones or no tool of that kind was ever found in the garden. He hung other things like punctured tires, broken mirrors, and springs, but most of the decoration hanging from the tree is made out of stone.
What happened to the Stone Garden?
atDarvish khan passed away in 2007 at the age of 90, he was buried in the same rock garden that he created. Till this day no one knows what the stones hanging from the trees represent. In 1976 there was a documentary made about this story which won the silver bear award in the Berlin International Film Festival. This garden lies 40 kilometers to the east of Sirjan on the Sirjan to Baft road.
